Your Mac and external drive can be stolen or damaged in a fire then your images are gone forever. If you are serious about backing-up your images you should consider using an off-site backup service. And if you have a backup you are covered if something goes wrong. The iPhoto instructions seem clear enough to me just be sure to follow them and you should be OK.

I would backup everything before making any changes just in case something goes wrong with the conversion process or you don't like the results. It has a very active developer who personally answers support questions on the SD! forum and via email very quickly. complete backups (a real time saver.) as well as scheduled automatic backups. Unless Dave has changed something SD! can be used for free to create a cloned volume. $29 for SuperDuper! and CCC offers no additional features that make it worth more money than SD!
